As I flick through Adelaide wedding magazines, the word vintage pops up a lot – whether it is in a bride’s description of her wedding dress style, the styling of a bridal shoot, or the cut of bridesmaid dresses. Vintage can mean a lot of things to a lot of different people – and it all comes down to the era you base your ‘vintage’ on.
Lace parasols, high tea parties, pearl and crystal make up the Victoria era – and you can add beautiful peonies to that list too. Each of these elements can be so easily entwined in each part of your wedding, from lace on the invites, to crystal details around the room, beautiful peonies and David Austin roses for floral centrepieces, and a beautiful dress with lace details and even crystal beading.
The roaring 20’s don’t just make a great party theme, but using it as your inspiration for your vintage wedding can give a sweet but sexy edge to your wedding style. Satin dresses, intricately elaborate head pieces, skirts that swing in tune to the music – and don’t forget the feathers!
Small headpiece veils or hats combined with Hollywood glamour make up the 30’s and 40s, and the use of bunting only complements this vintage era theme. It’s all about making more with less, as weddings weren’t elaborate in the wartime, but still just as beautiful.
When we move to the 50s we start thinking ‘retro’, rocking the beehive, big skirts, funky bright colours and dancing the night away (and I can’t help but think of ‘milkbars’ with black and white check tiled floors!).
The 60’s part mesh with the 50’s and the 70’s, and you can’t think of the 70’s without thinking hippies! A 70’s vintage theme would involve loose hairstyling, long floaty dresses, flowers used throughout the styling (even for the bride’s hair), and a relaxed, peaceful but truly loving feel to the wedding day.
There are many Adelaide wedding venues that could accommodate this vintage theme. AlRu Farm has seen this style before, as well as Longview Winery and K1 Winery, however there would be many other venues within your budget, area and dreams that could style your vintage wedding in Adelaide and surrounds.
If I could get married all over again, I think I would have no trouble at all styling a vintage wedding at Bird in Hand Winery in the Adelaide Hills, just 35 minutes from Adelaide. Jade on the other hand likes a blank canvas of an open space in Adelaide or country South Australia, where the venue can be styled in the vintage wedding theme, and open paddocks can offer the perfect backdrop for the best wedding photos, making use of the natural light.
The best thing about a vintage wedding is that you decide what vintage means to you. It might be the satin dress from the 20s, the loose wavy hair from the 70s, the bunting from the 40s. Whatever you believe vintage to be, your wedding is no doubt going to be beautiful!
